Our 800 pound gorilla

Yes, we are at it again; still trying to get our "800 pound gorilla" project out of the cage. Thankfully we still get phone calls asking about product, proving a few faithful are hanging on. Almost eight months ago we began this ambitious Web development project to promote the laser engraving aspect of our business. And we did not want to settle for the clunky or mechanical functionality of some 'trophy' Web sites; text boxes for phrases and static images representing font choices.

Seeing an opportunity to generate more revenue, microprocessor manufacturer Intel removed itself this week from the noteworthy One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program to develop its own low-cost laptop. Intel spokesman Chuck Molly said Intel made the decision to resign from the OLPC board and end its involvement because OLPC asked Intel to stop backing rival low-cost laptops. Oops!

Most of us do not care if there is intelligent life next door much less somewhere else in the Universe. In fact we (humans) are the only species on this planet that spends the majority of its resources (more than 10 trillion dollars a year) developing exotic methods of destroying each other. We spend another billion dollars creatively destroying our only home (Earth) through the selfish use of fossil fuels and other pollutants. Here is a footnote; we are not destroying the planet, we are destroying ourselves. The planet will be here well after humans become the next fossil fuel.

Scientists predict in approximately twenty years this planet will no longer possess enough resources to support our greed, and over population and lack of conservation will bring drought and disease. What does SETI have to do with this? We need hope that someone or something else smarter than us will show up and clean up the mess we created.
